Sight is energy leaving the person. –Leonardo da Vinci
It’s not polite to stare
There has been much discussion of the so-called “sense of being stared at” over the years since it began being empirically researched.
As far back as July of 1921 it was reported by the New York Times that Dr. Charles Russ had shown the Ophthalmological Congress at Oxford that with a properly designed apparatus a person could cause a solenoid to move by just gazing at it.1
Page 222 of the July 30th 1922 issue of the British medical journal The Lancet featured an article by Russ entitled “An Instrument Which Is Set In Motion by Vision or by Proximity of the Human Body.”
The device he called a “sthenometer.” It consisted of a balanced needle suspended by a thread inside a surrounding transparent shield, preferably made of quartz (although glass worked too). A horizontal dial marked off in degrees was placed below the horizontally suspended needle. Ross stated that it would instantly respond to either a gaze or the proximity of a human body.2
Unfortunately, since then the entrenched dogmatic materialism in the realm of mainline science has only stiffened, and most editors of the major publications ensure this type of material never sees the light of day through their journals.
It does not accord well with their Funda-Materialism.
Many experiments have shown the presence of a non-magnetic spin field around the body, including over 1,000 conducted and reported on by the late Dr. Buryl Payne.3
Apparently the earliest known such experiments were conducted by Frenchman Dr. Hippolyte Baraduc who evidently passed away in the early 1900s. The force field around the body which he identified he dubbed the “vital current.”4
Reichenbach and Mesmer found it and called it “animal magnetism.” Baraduc‘s work showed its flow could be modified through focused intent. As a result of several years of research, Russ believed that there was a transmission of power and force between people when one person looked at another, attributable to a ray emanating from the eye.5
Numerous studies into the sense of being stared at reinforce the idea that the act of looking at someone or something can actually affect the system being observed. According to biologist and paranormal researcher Rupert Sheldrake, many tests have been conducted in schools. This research has been popularized through New Scientist magazine, BBC TV, and Discovery Channel TV, and test procedures have been published on these organizations‘ websites, as well as on Sheldrake‘s own (www.sheldrake.org), allowing many people to participate in the research.
“At least twenty student projects in schools and universities have involved staring experiments; several have won prizes at science fairs. Altogether, there have been tens of thousands of trials.”6
According to Sheldrake,
The results are remarkably consistent. Typically, about 55% of the guesses are right, as opposed to 50% expected by chance. Repeated over tens of thousands of trials this result becomes astronomically significant statistically...In experiments in which the same subjects were tested repeatedly and given trial-by-trial feedback, there was a striking learning effect, with a significant (p=0.003) improvement in scores with practice (Colwell et al., 2000). In a German school, with repeated testing, some 8 to 9 year-old children achieved accuracies as high as 90%.7
The sense of being stared at effect is widely replicable, with many studies yielding positive results. In Russia, the well-known psychic Mikhail Kuni found by working with hundreds of people that the deaf and dumb were particularly good at sensing an unseen person‘s glance. Dr. Bernard B. Kajinsky worked with the psychic Vladimir Durov and reportedly almost all those subjected to Durov‘s gaze could tell when he stared hard. 8
In a student project in Ireland, Susan and Jennifer Brodigan compared the results with pairs of twins as lookers and starers with the results from pairs of untwinned siblings and people who were unrelated (subjects/starees were blindfolded and not given feedback). Twins scored significantly higher than untwinned siblings or unrelated people,9 suggesting stronger psi between twins—a suggestion common to anecdotal evidence.
Noted parapsychologist and bestselling author Dean Radin analysed the results of variations of staring experiments, constituting 33,357 trials over sixty experiments from publications cited by Sheldrake and others. The overall success rate was 54.5% as opposed to the 50% expected by chance, registering odds against chance of 202 octodecillion (that’s 2 × 10-to-the-59th power) to one.
Even accounting for an estimated “file drawer” of six unreported null-result studies, odds against chance remained absurdly high at 1046 to one.10
There is an observer effect on living systems, in other words. Period.
Note that the success of staring trials does not depend on a minority of especially sensitive subjects, but rather represents a general tendency for subjects to score better when they are actually being looked at than when they are not. The results indicate that the intuitive faculties are innate in our species—hardly a revelation for frequenters of my work.
“More than 100,000 trials have now been carried out, and the results are overwhelmingly positive and hugely significant statistically, with odds against chance of quadrillions to one,” Sheldrake has stated.11
Gravity with a twist
Is there an unseen energy unconsciously emitted by an observer at all observed systems?
In quantum theory, nonlocality doesn‘t allow for the transmission of any detectable electromagnetic (EM) signals in space-time, but rather, simultaneous correlations. However, the twisting torsion energy (rotating charge fields) inherent in the “fabric of gravity” (or “aether” if you prefer) theoretically allows for superluminal and instantaneous information transfer without recognisable/measurable EM energy transfer.
Superluminal energies presumably are time-reversed too, meaning they may be like a signal from what we think of as the “future” reaching “back” to us here and now, similar to Cramer’s transactional interpretation of quantum mechanics.
This is interesting given that physicist Roy Frieden postulates conscious observation of a system injects information into it, which thereby interacts with the energy and matter within the object, and between this and other objects, flowing from one space-time object to another.12
Is the flow of information between objects (or observer and observed) a form of retrocausal/backwards through time signalling?
Obviously the information must not be part of the detectable part of the electromagnetic spectrum if we can’t find or observe it using our sophisticated and otherwise pretty effective technology.
The postulation of information injection into an observed system by the observer is pertinent in the sense that even mainstream physics has reached the point of increasingly viewing the universe as a holographic information processor.*
Information is now viewed as even more fundamental than energy.
In this model information provides the “bits” that combine to produce what we measure and experience as energy and matter. The cosmos self-organizes using this information as its “building blocks,” hence, “It from bit.”
And time, in this model is simultaneous: past, present and future all coexist in the same space, superposed over one another.
In terms of David Yurth‘s “Y-Bias and Angularity Theory,” the Source (of all consciousness, information, and energy) is referred to as the Physical Vacuum.13 Elsewhere in physics, the One is referred to by Maxwell and Whittaker as the primary field of infinite scalar potential. This is the causal realm from which undifferentiated information emerges from scalar potentials to create matter and energy.14
Regardless of what the mainstream Copenhagen view of quantum mechanics suggests about nonlocality, it seems only logical to infer that there could indeed be an information “exchange” between subject and object during an observation. Perhaps information in the form of superluminal energy is what we are looking for—or some kind of instantaneous “recognition” between subject and object.
What the precise nature of such an “information exchange” as brought about by observation actually is, is yet to be definitively settled…
Now it’s personal
Roughly two years into my own conscious journey—after my original awakening—I was spending some time with a Spiritualist church in Sydney. This was mainly for the purposes of attending a weekly trance mediumship class (primarily to help my quality of meditation, and hopefully stimulate my psi faculties—which it did) and to occasionally observe mediums giving platform readings at the weekly church services.
I also attended a couple of development workshops run by a gifted clairvoyant I will refer to as D.P.
I wanted to test D.P.‘s clairvoyance, in particular to see if she could perceive mental energy and manipulations and/or projections of it. She suggested I send some love energy to some point of my own choosing on a large tree just outside the window of the hall we were using—she would clairvoyantly identify the point of contact on the tree.
Making sure there was no possibility for D.P. to physically observe where my head or eyes were pointing, I silently selected a spot on the tree and mentally beamed some energy at it. Almost immediately, D.P. (standing with her back to me) exclaimed “There!” and correctly identified my target, pointing with no hesitation. She did this accurately and quickly each time we ran this little test.
I was convinced she could see my mental energy and where I was directing it. There were no reflective surfaces or other aides that might have revealed through ordinary means where I was aiming on the tree—which was large enough that there could be no ambiguity in terms of the accuracy of D.P.‘s “guesses.”
This was my first intimate contact with the concept of consciousness energy emanating from the eyes (or biofield more generally). It showed me up close and personal that “mind” (or attention) has a visible energy, regardless of what any soi-disant “sceptic” believes. (Besides, how many “sceptics” ever bother to get off their computer chair to do some leg work? Very few in my experience.)
Perhaps two or three years later I found myself with a highly psychic girlfriend (surprise, surprise). Out of the blue one day, while riding on public transport, she made the comment that my eyes were emanating light in a way she had never seen before.
I didn‘t get much more information than that out of her, but again an independent source had presented me with the notion that there is indeed a bio-energy that radiates from the eyes.
(Psychics often have unusual observations to share about me, but that’s another tangent…)
And yes, we know that bioenergy radiates from the entire body, but there seems to be something a little different about the eyes…
Etheric energy and torsion
In standard occult terms, we can identify this energy we speak of as ether/prana/chi—depending on the framework you want to reference. (I spell ether without an “a” to indicate the personal etheric field, and use aether with an “a” to indicate the general transpersonal aetheric medium of various densities, AKA, the “quantum field" or “zero point field.”)
Before anyone protests “But didn‘t you say we were talking about something called ‘torsion energy’ before?”, I want to clarify something.
The human auric/mind field has different qualities to it. Some refer to it as a torsion field—thus emphasising the invisible spin or rotation it possesses—while others, such as Jay Alfred,15 emphasise the plasma-like quality of it by referring to it as magnetic plasma (“magma” for short).
To acknowledge both elements, I sometimes refer to the mind-field/s as torsion-plasma fields.
“Torsion field” is really a non-scientific term that relates more specifically in this context to the way that superluminal charge fields (or currents) centripetally rotate and compress into a centre point, generating energy, matter, and mass, for instance. (Tip of the hat to maestro Dan Winter for elucidating this in detail.)
Author
16 emphasizes the sonic/sound aspect of torsion fields, suggesting that sound is more important than—and precedes—light, in terms of creation (first there was the “Word,” and only after was there light, Biblically speaking.)I agree with this sentiment re: sound’s fundamental quality, and touch on this a little more in Book 1 and forthcoming Book 2 where one author’s out-of-body experience relates DIRECTLY to this idea in a surprising way.
In the course of researching for The Grand Illusion - Book 1, the lines of plasma and torsion ran concurrently and rapidly converged.
Some researchers spoke of the mind/auric fields as being plasmoidal; others as torsion fields. At least two aether researchers I know of (including David Thomson) have explained that when “excited” (electrically) the aetheric medium/quantum field behaves like a plasma.1
Reich and the visual ray
The scientific genius and pioneer Wilhelm Reich re-discovered etheric energy (or “prana”) and called it orgone (pronounced as “organ”). His device, the orgone accumulator, was a simple, layered solid-state structure that actually succeeded in harnessing free orgone energy.
It not only generated “anomalous” temperature increases from “out of nowhere,” but, rigged in a particular way, it could run a 25-volt motor indefinitely—thus “slaughtering the sacred cow” (to borrow David Wilcock‘s phraseology) known as the Second Law of Thermodynamics.
For his troubles in breaking new scientific ground which could have benefitted the whole of mankind, Reich was persecuted by the U.S. government and A.M.A., jailed, and ultimately died under the strain of it all while incarcerated. (Such is life in the “land of the free.”)
Independent researcher and biologist Trevor James Constable studied Reich‘s material and conducted his own extensive investigations into UFOs, in the process establishing the plasma-like and yet apparently non-electromagnetic nature of orgone—and that this bio-energy is in fact what most UFOs in our atmosphere appear to be composed of.
What matters, as Constable notes, is that orgone/etheric energy is actually physical rather than “spiritual.”
It is mass-free and “non-electromagnetic” but still part of our space-time reference frame in that it can be perceived by those with functional etheric vision, those with the proper viewing apparatus (such as dicyanin goggles), and even people with “ordinary” vision—under favourable circumstances.
We might suggest that the etheric plane—physical, though of finer density—is something of a buffer between space-time and reciprocal time-space. When we can “channel” the energy of the etheric plane, we discover negentropy—time-reversed effects that orthodox science cannot explain. This is where “free energy” resides, as Reich and others have shown.
Pranic/orgone energy is something I have spent some time observing in its free state in the atmosphere. It looks like a “soup” of highly energetic bright pin-points of light which “wriggle” and spiral through the air before vanishing from sight. You have probably seen it too. The primary source of this life-energy is the sun.
(Spend long enough observing and you may find that these particles will cover the expanse of your visual field, at which point it will create the effect of a moving “web” of life energy that feels strangely internal while looking external to you. That may be because your visual etheric ray is an extension of your own bodily etheric double—composed of the very substance you are observing in free form in the atmosphere.)
We all have an etheric or “vital” body—of that we can permit no reasonable doubt, due to the large amounts of empirical evidence available proving it (see TGI for an overview of the relevant science). It is an exact holographic energetic duplicate of the physical body, and it is also thought to be the source of the beam of mass-free orgone/etheric energy that emanates from our eyes.
As Constable states, as someone who verified Rudolph Steiner‘s remarks on the matter, “Departure of a ray of energy from the human eye is an integral part of the process of vision.”
Thus, the visual ray of orgone energy is literally an extension of your consciousness out beyond the confines of the body. It acts like a radar, only a more sophisticated one that both imparts to and receives information from whatever it interacts with—this includes “inert” matter as well as living systems. Constable states that, with some practise, you can physically feel this beam of energy cross your hands as you pass it back and forth over them in a darkened room.17
There is other good, if indirect, empirical evidence for a “non-EM” ray of energy which can be directed from our bodies to a selected target. Enter Russian researcher Dr. Konstantin Korotkov of St Petersburg. In 1996 Korotkov developed a range of instruments for stimulation, recording, and processing of electro-photonic images of body parts and called his technique Gas Discharge Visualization (GDV).
Based on the earlier technology developed by Semyon Kirlian, this new technique allowed quantification of the human energy field for the first time.
One of many fascinating GDV experiments of Korotkov‘s is one he did on water.
A 1 ml sample of de-ionized water in a test tube was suspended in the GDV instrument so that a consistent series of electro-photonic images could be recorded. Without external influence the intensity of the electro-photonic glow of the water sample was constant. Then the water was the subject of a very intensive conscious concentration exercise by a “highly skilled” person, Allan Chumak. In essence, Allan focused on imagining the water as an integral part of his Self. No physical contact between Allan and any part of the instrument occurred. After 10 minutes of conscious and coherent information transfer the electro- photonic glow became nearly 30 times more intense than the initial glow...18 (emphasis added)
Korotkov rightly suggests that the increase in the electro-photonic glow around a drop of water cannot be explained without considering the energy and the information transfer from our consciousness.
Being stared at
When the visual info-energetic beam/ray contacts the etheric body of another living being, it is detected by their own etheric/orgone field. A meaningful interaction then takes place, as subconscious levels of awareness process the exchange of information and energy, and the observed organism assesses the event.
Empirical research has revealed not just that people are statistically more likely to feel like someone is staring at them when they actually are, but that the very act of looking creates subtle physiological effects that are not even registered consciously.
Compelling experiments known as Distant Mental Influence of Living Systems or DMILS have been carried out by psychologist William Braud at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology in Palo Alto, California, and anthropologist Marilyn Schlitz, Research Director for the Institute of Noetic Sciences. They have repeatedly shown that if a person simply attends fully to a distant person whose physiological activity is being monitored, he or she (acting as a sender) can influence the distant person‘s autonomic galvanic skin responses.
In four separate experiments involving seventy-eight sessions, one person staring intently at a closed-circuit TV monitor image of a distant participant, influenced the remote person‘s electrodermal (galvanic skin) responses. In these cases no techniques of intentional focusing or mental imaging were used by the influencer. He or she simply stared at the “staree‘s” image on the video screen during the 30-second trials, which were randomly interspersed with control periods.
In these studies, Braud and Schlitz discovered something even more interesting than this telepathically induced effect on our unconscious system. They found that, while they were being stared at, the most shy, anxious and introverted people had the largest unconscious electrodermal responses, meaning they “reacted with significantly more stress to being stared at than did the sociable and extroverted people.”
Quiet introverts may possess, or have developed, a higher sensitivity to the consciousness or at least the attention of others.
“This experiment,” write Targ and Katra, “gives scientific validation to the common human experience of feeling stared at and turning around to find that someone is, indeed, staring at you.”19
It also validates the scientific research of Sheldrake and his colleagues on the sense of being stared at, which we have already mentioned in demonstrating the ability of conscious observation to act as an entangling factor between subject and object.
Interestingly, decades ago, the electrochemist Douglas Dean discovered by using a plethysmograph that when someone concentrates on the name of a person with whom he or she has an emotional tie, the distant subject registers a measurable change in blood pressure and volume in his/her finger (showing autonomic nervous system activation). Dean found about one in four people to have this sensitivity.20
Thus, we can see that even without directly observing a living system—and therefore “contacting” it with our visual ray—we can still influence it merely by thinking of it, at least if there is an emotional component present in the thought.
The aetheric medium/quantum field is effectively a totally integrated medium that has a ubiquitous “nonlocal” character.
Everything is interconnected. Period.
Don‘t think superluminal speeds are possible? Think again.
Pioneering Russian scientist Nikolai Kozyrev (1908–83) proved decades ago that torsion fields travel at superluminal speeds, showing that a physical vacuum/zero-point energy/aether must really exist.21
His work in astronomy revealed that by calculating the actual real-time position of a star or other celestial object and aiming a telescope at where it should be, his time- flow/torsion detector (built into the telescope) would register a measurable signal—despite the fact that he shielded the lens from EM energy and light, and despite the fact that the star (or other body) was not yet visibly in that position (due to the large amounts of time light takes to reach us on earth, we are always looking out at a star‘s past location, not its present one ).
If Kozyrev calculated the future position of the star, his time-flow detector still recorded an effect, albeit a smaller one, thus proving that this energy is trans-temporal, not limited by our linear sense of time. The signal from the past was also not as strong as the signal from the star‘s present position—it weakened in either direction away from the present.22
Thus, Kozyrev successfully showed that time/torsion was an energy that had tangible effects, even when emanating from the future or the past to us in the present, but the fact that the present position could be detected at all meant the obliteration of Einstein‘s belief—slavishly parroted by mainstream physicists even today—that light-speed is the maximum possible speed limit.
In a series of experiments conducted over more than thirty years, Greg Hodowanec and a number of his colleagues, along with several Russian scientific teams, succeeded in detecting and measuring gravitational fluctuations in heavenly bodies— particularly the sun—in real time.23
Can the atemporal spin fields in gravity be put to other, more earthly uses?
Apparently they can.
In 2001, Dr. Hartmut Müller used the spin/torsion fields within “gravity” to make a real- time telephone call from the Toezler Medientage building in Germany to Saint Petersburg in Russia—no EM fields were used. The communication was therefore instantaneous, without the time lag normal EM communication systems present.24
We could go on ramming home this point about superluminal speeds and instantaneous connections between distant systems, but the above should suffice for our purposes (See Book 1 for more).
The aetheric medium/gravity has energy “flows” within it that greatly surpass light speed. In our framework, this simply shows that there is nothing particularly implausible about the idea that the etheric/orgone energy of consciousness emanating from our eyes travels superluminally, facilitating a sort of “causal nonlocality.”
Could there be an electromagnetic component to the sense of being stared at?
There was an experiment conducted by Colin A. Ross and reported in Anthropology of Consciousness in March, 2010, that deserves a mention here. Briefly, Ross was looking for an electromagnetic basis—in the 1–40 Hz range, from 1–100 microvolts—for the “evil eye,” as well as the sense of being stared at.
Using a high-impedance electrode in an EM-insulated environment, his results did indeed show that the extremely-low-frequency EM signal coming from the eyes was stronger in amplitude in certain frequency ranges than that emanating from the rest of the skull, even if only detected at short range.
While extremely-low-frequency EM signals suffer extremely little attenuation as they propagate—and therefore may conceivably be involved in local staring effects—Ross acknowledges, however, that the small EM signals he measured cannot account for the fact that the sense of being stared at can be transmitted through, for instance, CCTV cameras to distant people.
He points out that his results obviously do not rule out other non-EM emissions functioning in tandem with the detectable EM frequencies, and mentions the possibility of Sheldrake‘s non-EM morphogenic fields, which we have identified here and in TGI Book 1 as “torsion-plasma fields,” or as the occultist would say, etheric fields:
“The measurable component of ocular extramission [radiation] in the 0–40 Hertz range could be considered to be a special limited instance of the larger theoretical category of morphogenic fields.”25
Conclusions—If Any
While mainstream scientists of a “mechano-materialistic” bent generally balk fearfully at the results of the many experiments proving beyond rational doubt that people can and sometimes do sense when someone is looking at them, even the parapsychologists doing these important experiments have by and large failed to postulate a convincing causal mechanism for the phenomenon, other than appealing to quantum nonlocality (understandably).
It may seem evident to a student of the esoteric that part of the answer has been staring us in the face for some time: the etheric/pranic/orgone body known for millennia to seers and healers alike—now considered to be plasma-like—may generate from the region of the eyes a time-reversed (“quantum nonlocal”) superluminal “non-EM” beam of information that remotely interacts with everything we observe.
And yet, this still doesn’t fully explain cases where systems can be remotely affected with no visual contact whatsoever.
We cannot help but affect any system we observe—or even think about. Everything is interconnected.
Whether we like it or not, we always leave an informational signature behind, while simultaneously obtaining information about the target. Once the target, say, a living human, detects through their own consciousness that they are being watched (or thought about) by someone, a common result is a mild physiological stress response.
Thus we have, aside from identifying the apparent importance of the etheric visual ray in some staring experiments, also supplied some “missing links” in the mind-body discussion, namely, the etheric/orgone/prana/vital body.

This is a truly excellent piece, Brendan. Given your stellar track record when venturing into such "paranormal" domains, I expected nothing less.
Fascinating assemblage of research. Thankyou for your thoroughness. For my own part I experiment often while driving at rush hour and definitely notice that the odds are very high that a person who I stare at , while stopped, whether in a car or on the sidewalk invariably looks back within seconds. Busted!
